Tire Strategy Guide
Master F1's most crucial strategic element. Understand compounds, degradation, and pit stops.
Tire Compounds
Maximum grip, quick lap times, but wears out fastest. Usually 10-20 laps.
When to use:
Qualifying, short stints, end of race when track is clear
Good balance of speed and durability. Usually 20-30 laps.
When to use:
Middle stints, most common race tire for balanced strategy
Longest lasting but slower lap times. Can last 30-40+ laps.
When to use:
Long stints, high degradation tracks, one-stop strategies
For damp or drying track. Has grooves to disperse water.
When to use:
Light rain, drying track conditions
Deep grooves for heavy rain. Displaces 85 liters of water per second!
When to use:
Heavy rain, standing water on track
Key Concepts
Tires lose grip over time. Softer = faster but degrades quicker. Teams must balance speed vs. longevity.
Time difference between compounds. Soft can be 0.5-1s faster per lap than medium, but wears out sooner.
A pit stop costs ~20-25 seconds. Strategies aim to minimize stops while keeping tires fresh.
Common Race Strategies
Start on mediums, switch to hards. Most common in modern F1.

More aggressive with softer compounds and multiple stops.

Pit earlier than rival, use fresh tires to gain track position.

Stay out longer on old tires, build gap, then pit.

Watch the graphics: TV broadcasts show tire age and compound. Older tires = potential pit stop soon.
Track position matters: In Monaco, track position is everything. Teams will sacrifice tire life to stay ahead.
Safety cars change everything: A well-timed safety car can give a "free" pit stop, completely changing the race.
Two compound rule: Each driver must use at least 2 different dry compounds during the race (unless wet).
