F1 Radio Jargon
"Box box." "Tyre cliff." "Free air." You hear it every race weekend. Here's what it all actually means.
Come into the pit lane now
"Hamilton, box box box." → Hamilton pits immediately.
Clean air ahead, no dirty air from another car
"You're in free air now, push hard." → No car immediately ahead disrupting airflow.
The moment when pitting would allow you to come out ahead of the car in front
"We're in the undercut window for P3." → If we pit now, we could emerge ahead of 3rd place.
Time difference — either to another car, lap record, or safety car pace
"Delta is plus 1.2." → You're 1.2 seconds slower than the target time.
Minimum pace required behind the safety car — go too slow and you get a penalty
"Mind your delta, stay above the minimum." → Don't drop below the required pace.
Weave side to side to heat up cold tyres and generate grip
Said before pit exit or after safety car periods.
Switch engine to maximum power mode (qualifying/overtake)
Teams use code words for engine modes. "P" = power mode.
(Historical) Used to be the 1-second gap needed to activate DRS. Now means gap to the car ahead.
In 2026, there is no DRS — but "gap to car ahead" is still critical for active aero.
Sudden dramatic loss of tyre performance — grip falls off rapidly
"He's hit the tyre cliff on those hard compounds." → Performance has nosedived.
Tyre surface breaks up into small rubber pellets, reducing grip temporarily
"He's suffering from severe graining on the fronts." → Temporary degradation issue.
Heat damage — bubbles form inside the tyre rubber, causing sudden failure
More serious than graining — can lead to a blowout.
The rear of the car steps out (oversteer) suddenly and briefly
"Big snap at Turn 9." → The rear slid out, nearly causing a spin.
Front of the car won't turn — car pushes wide on corners
"Lots of understeer in the low-speed stuff." → Front end not responding.
Rear of the car turns too much — car rotates excessively in corners
"The car is oversteering on corner exit." → Back end is loose.
Fastest time set in that track sector by any driver — shown in purple on TV timing
"He's gone purple in sector 2!" → Fastest anyone has been through that section today.
Lift off throttle and coast into a braking zone to save fuel
"Lift and coast into Turn 4 this lap to save fuel." → Don't brake hard, coast in.
Stewards want to speak to the driver/team about an incident
Displayed on timing screens — team summoned to see stewards.
VSC — all cars must slow to a controlled pace, no SC physical car on track
"VSC deployed" → Everyone slows to delta pace, overtaking not allowed.
