Pit Stop Strategy
Master the art of undercut vs overcut. Timing is everything.
Pit Stop Basics
2.5s
World record is 1.82s by Red Bull Racing (2019)
~20-25s
Total time lost entering pit lane, stop, and rejoining
20+
16 tire changers + jack operators + others
What Is It?
Pitting EARLIER than your rival to get fresh tires. You use the tire advantage to set faster laps and jump ahead when they pit.
Timeline Example:
๐๏ธ You pit for fresh tires
โก Your fresh tires = 1s/lap faster than rival on old tires
๐๏ธ Rival pits but you've built enough gap
โ You're ahead! Undercut successful
When It Works Best:
- +High tire degradation tracks (Barcelona, Silverstone)
- +Clean air advantage (no traffic after pitting)
- +Large tire delta (switching from old hards to fresh softs)
What Is It?
Staying out LONGER than your rival. While they pit, you push hard on your old tires, building a gap that lets you stay ahead when you finally pit.
Timeline Example:
๐๏ธ Rival pits for fresh tires
โก You push hard, extending your stint, building track position
๐๏ธ You finally pit with enough gap built
โ You emerge ahead! Overcut successful
When It Works Best:
- +Low tire degradation (tires last longer)
- +Rival gets stuck in traffic after pitting
- +You need longer stint on fresh tires at race end
Key Strategic Factors
Rejoining behind slow cars kills your strategy. Teams monitor traffic constantly.
๐ก Pit when track is clear ahead = critical!
A safety car after you pit = disaster. After rival pits = huge advantage (free stop for them).
โ ๏ธ Timing + luck = everything
Bigger tire advantage = stronger undercut. Fresh softs vs old hards = huge delta.
๐ Can gain 1-2 seconds per lap
Monaco = track position is king. Teams sacrifice tire life to stay ahead.
๐ Hard to overtake = different strategies
Watch the lap times: If a driver suddenly speeds up, they're reacting to a rival's pit stop (defending against undercut).
Listen to team radio: "Box this lap" = pit now. "Stay out" = overcut attempt or waiting for clear track.
Track the tire age: 10+ lap difference = massive undercut potential.
Remember the pit loss: ~24 seconds means you need to gain 0.8s/lap for 3 laps to break even.
