F1 Flag System
Every flag explained. Know what race control is telling the drivers.
Meaning
Track is clear, racing can begin or resume
What Drivers Do
Go racing! Start of race or end of caution period.
Example:
Waved at race start and after safety car periods end.
Meaning
Danger ahead - slow down, no overtaking
What Drivers Do
Lift off throttle, prepare to take evasive action. NO overtaking allowed.
Example:
Crashed car on track, debris, or marshal on circuit. Double yellow = extreme danger, be prepared to stop.
Meaning
Session stopped immediately
What Drivers Do
Slow down and return to pit lane. Race/qualifying suspended.
Example:
Heavy crash, unsafe track conditions, or extreme weather. Happened in Belgium 2021 due to rain.

Faster car approaching, you must let them pass
What Drivers Do
Move aside within 3 blue flag signals or face a penalty.
Example:
Lapped driver must let race leaders through. If you ignore 3 flags, expect a penalty!
Meaning
Slow vehicle on track ahead
What Drivers Do
Be cautious, expect slow-moving vehicle (medical car, tow truck, etc.)
Example:
Medical car on track or recovery vehicle removing crashed car.
Meaning
Disqualification - report to pits immediately
What Drivers Do
Your race is over. Return to pits NOW.
Example:
Extremely rare. Serious rule violation or dangerous driving. Last used in 2007.
Meaning
Warning for unsportsmanlike behavior
What Drivers Do
Final warning! Next offense = penalty.
Example:
Shown with car number. Track limits violations, forcing another car off track.
Meaning
Mechanical problem - return to pits
What Drivers Do
Your car has damage or issue. Pit immediately for safety.
Example:
Shown with car number. Loose bodywork, damaged wing, or mechanical failure.
Meaning
Slippery track surface ahead
What Drivers Do
Reduce speed, track has low grip (oil, water, debris)
Example:
Oil spill, rain starting, or wet patches on track.
Meaning
Race finished!
What Drivers Do
Complete your in-lap and return to parc fermé.
Example:
Leader crosses line first to see the chequered flag. Everyone else finishes after.
Most Common: Yellow (caution), Blue (let faster car past), Chequered (race end)
Serious Flags: Red flag stops everything. Black flag = disqualification (very rare).
Watch For: If you see yellow, expect slower pace and no overtaking in that sector.
Blue Flag Drama: Ignoring blue flags is a common penalty. Drivers have ~3 marshalling posts to comply.
